Our mission is to strengthen the knowledge and skills necessary for professional and ethical public and nonprofit management through our scholarship in teaching, research and service. We seek to be the preferred program of choice and nationally recognized, providing the highest quality education for careers in public and nonprofit management based on a contemporary curriculum, innovative instruction, scholarly and applied research and community service. As part of the School of Public and Global Affairs (SPGA), we are committed to strengthening the knowledge and skills that enhance the management and leadership capacity of individuals pursuing public service careers.

Ranked 4th in the nation for Local Government Management, 15th in Public Finance and Budgeting, 37th in Public Management and Leadership and 52 in overall public affairs by U.S. News & World Report the NIU MPA program is an excellent choice for students looking to advance their careers in the field of public administration. These rankings outperform all other public and private institutions in Illinois, as well as many other schools nationwide, so it comes as no surprise that one-third of all city and county managers in Illinois are alumni of the program.
