The Master of Public Administration Program of Northern Illinois University began in 1963 and achieved the status as one of the best public administration programs in the United States. Its alumni include leaders in a variety of areas of Federal, state, and local government as well as human service and other non-profit agencies. Pi Alpha Alpha

Pi Alpha Alpha is the national honor society for the field of public affairs and public administration for universities and colleges which are members of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA).

ASPA Outstanding Student

Presented by ASPA to a student who is selected by the faculty of the MPA program based upon criteria such as GPA, starred paper quality, excellence on comprehensive examinations.

James M. Banovetz Fellowship

Awarded to an NIU MPA student who has exhibited exceptional potential for a successful career in local government management. Endowed in 2000 by David and Catherine Arnold, the fellowship is to honor Professor Emeritus James M. Banovetz for his leadership in developing the NIU graduate program in public administration as one of the premier programs in the United States.

Academic Achievement Award (4.0 GPA)

Presented to MPA students those who achieved 4.0 GPA.

Scholars Award (3.75-3.99 GPA)

Presented to MPA students those who achieved 3.75 or higher GPA.

Model Public Administrator Award (Pre-Service)

Presented for outstanding leadership and performance as a pre-service administrator during the academic year.

Model Public Administrator Award (Emerging)

Presented for outstanding leadership and performance as an emerging administrator.

Model Public Administrator Award (Mid-Career)

Presented for outstanding leadership and performance mid-career as an administrator.

Intern of the Year

Presented for excellence and exemplary performance as a management intern in the field of public administration.

Community Service Award

Presented to a student who has performed exceptional services to the community.

Distinguished Manuscript Award

Presented to MPA students for excellence of their starred paper.

Outstanding Peer Award

Presented to a student based on selection by her/his peers as the MPA Program's outstanding student leader during the academic year.

Supervisor of the Year Award

Presented to a supervisor for demonstrating excellence in intern supervision, for assuming the role of professional mentor, and for providing extraordinary opportunities to their intern for professional development.

Professor of the Year Award

MPA students are provided the opportunity to recognize a member of the MPA teaching faculty whom they believe to be outstanding.

Outstanding Service Award

Presented to a student who has demonstrated exceptional service to the university community.
