Welcome to the Department of Public Administration
The Department of Public Administration’s mission is to strengthen the knowledge and skills necessary for professional and ethical public and nonprofit management through our scholarship in teaching, research, and service. The Department seeks to be the preferred program of choice and nationally recognized, providing the highest quality education for careers in public and nonprofit management based on a contemporary curriculum, innovative instruction, scholarly and applied research, and community service. As part of the School of Public and Global Affairs (SPGA), the Department is committed to strengthening the knowledge and skills that enhance the management and leadership capacity of individuals pursuing public service careers.
Students may pursue one of three graduate level programs in the Department of Public Administration at NIU:
- Graduate Certificate in Public Management
- Master of Public Administration (MPA)
- PhD in Public Administration in partnership with the Department of Political Science
The Master of Public Administration (MPA) will serve you as a practical management guide as well as a passport to a better career. Our MPA program offers five specializations focusing on non-profits, local government, fiscal administration, public management and leadership, and comparative public service. Students are encouraged to participate in internships in their area of interest to gain hands-on experience while pursuing their degree.
